As part of celebrating Reba’s big birthday, we went to north Italy, Lakes Como and Maggiore, for a flower garden tour.
Flowers galore! Azaleas, Rhododendrons, roses everywhere, poppies of all colors, and species unknown to us. Also, a large flock of white peacocks and other exotic birds; the fabulous Hotel Villa d’Este; powerboating around islands; impressive villas. In the latter category was Villa Cicogna, with many Renaissance frescoes fresh as new, and a fascinating tour led by a descendent of the founder, Jacopo Mozzoni Cicogna. Reawakened the Renaissance scholar in Reba—her thesis was “Vasari and Prints,” for which she was complimented by “The Pope,” renowned Renaissance scholar John Pope-Hennessy.
Kudos to Boxwood Tours, organizer and leader.
P.S. We’re planning a return trip to Italy in the fall—Rome and Venice—for Dave’s birthday.
